The Owls take all three points in Tucson

One of the expansion sides in USL League One continued to fly high early this season. Union Omaha continued their unbeaten start to the season as they came away with a 2-1 win over FC Tucson over the weekend.

It didn’t take long in the second half for Union Omaha to break down the struggling FC Tucson defense. In the 48th minute, free from any defensive pressure, Luke Hauswirth received a perfect pass from Ethan Vanacore-Decker just inside the penalty box. He blasted a right footed shot that ricocheted off of defender Niall Logue for the first goal of the match. Ten minutes later, Vanacore-Decker put one of his own in the back of the net due to a deflection off another FC Tucson defender, Charlie Booth. Vanacore-Decker now has a goal to go along with the two assists he’s collected so far this season.

FC Tucson cut the lead in half in stoppage time, however, Union Omaha were able to hold on to a 2-1 result on the road. Minus the late goal, FC Tucson appeared to lack the drive and intensity they displayed in the first half. Like the match against Chattanooga, they were incapable of stopping the early second half goal. After going down 0-1, it seemed to be Union Omaha’s game to lose.

If there is one potential vulnerability for the Owls early in the season, it would be their bend-don’t-break defense. The Owls were fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to fend off FC Tucson in the first half or they had to rely on the immense talents of Rashid Nuhu. It will be interesting to see how that defense holds up against a Chattanooga Red Wolves side that is also without a loss and nipping at their heels in third place.
