Thorns prepare for Preseason Tournament

Stopped by the Portland Thorns practice on Friday as the team preps for their preseason tournament which kicks-off on Sunday, March 12th and quickly talked to head coach Mike Norris.

The Thorns had a closed-door scrimmage against Washington State March 5th, of which head coach Mike Norris said, “Spent quite a bit of time in the attacking moment of the game. Probably would’ve been good to spend a bit more defending time, but it was a good run out. We got some people, some good minutes, got everybody on the field. Happy with the technicality.”

As far as injuries for the Thorns, Sophia Smith was practicing fully today. Reyna Reyes is in her return to play, and is touch and go for playing at the backend of the tournament. Lauren DeBeau picked up an injury on Tuesday, which shouldn’t keep her out too long. Tegan McGrady will miss the tournament and likely the season opener (the Thorns are hosting the Orlando Pride, March 26th).

The big goal for the Thorns over the tournament is to build through gaining minutes for players. The snowstorm that hit Portland a few weeks ago did cause the team to have to cancel a closed-door exhibition.
