MIA Atrio represents The U with pride

“The U is being a part of something great like a family.” That’s what freshman Mia Atrio told BGN about what the University of Miami means to her.

A native of Coral Gables, Florida, Atrio had a historic high school career at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy. Helping the team win back-to-back state titles (the first two in school history), she scored over 100 goals and her accolades in high school included being named a three-time Miami Herald First-Team All-Dade member, two-time Miami Herald All-Dade Player of the Year, and the 7A-5A All-Dade Female Athlete of the Year.

When it came time to choose where to continue her academic and athletic career, Mia took the same path as her dad, former Miami Hurricane wide receiver, Andy Atrio. “It was very special for me to put on the Miami colors because it had always been a dream of mine to play for the U and continue his legacy,” Mia said.

She got that opportunity to put on those recognizable Miami colors in the fall when she made her NCAA debut for the Canes. She said, “I think the games I have played so far have been a great learning experience that I can take something new from each game.”

“I am looking forward to improving on being more aggressive and decisive on the field because of the speed of play that comes with playing in the ACC.”

Atrio’s growth should coincide with more team success for Miami. The Hurricanes haven’t had a winning record since the 2016 season and will be looking to turn things around under head coach Sarah Barnes. “As a team, we have put in so much work these past months and we have already seen improvement which gives me confidence that we can make a great turnaround this spring,” Atrio said. “I am extremely motivated to help this team get back on track. We have the dedication and effort to do it and because of our record last season, we have something to prove.”

Growing up in South Florida and now getting to play for her hometown Hurricanes, Mia is definitely an expert on things to do in Coral Gables. “I enjoy going out on the boat because we have such great weather year-round and going out to eat with friends and family,” she said. “I love Cuban food, so I’d say eating at Casa Cuba is one of my favorite local places. Going to sporting events down here is always a good time as well.”

What three songs would Mia put on a Miami playlist? She said, “Miami” by Will Smith, “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida, and I would say any song by Pitbull should be on a Miami playlist.”

Make sure to get your favorite South Florida songs ready because this weekend features a matchup of two schools located in the 305 as Mia Atrio and Miami will host FIU on Sunday night.
