Lights Match Preview #24: LV vs. PHX

After a loss on the road to Orange County SC, Las Vegas Lights FC return to Cashman Field to host Phoenix Rising FC.

Las Vegas Lights FC were not able to take advantage of an early goal and playing the most of the second half with a man advantage against Orange County on Wednesday. Now, they will look to keep their home winning streak rolling when they face the high octane Phoenix Rising FC attack.

Last Time They Met

Phoenix Rising took a 4-0 result at home vs. Lights FC in June. Jason Johnson scored a brace, with Joseph Farrell and Solomon Asante each scoring once.

Opposing Players to Watch

Solomon Asante: In my opinion, one of the most top 5 players I would pay to watch in the USL. The diminutive winger has blazing speed and skill for days on the ball. He bagged a hat trick last week against a stingy Orange County SC defense.

Jason Johnson: Whether he starts or comes off the bench, the Jamaican is a handful for any defender. He has seven goals this season and most of them were highlight-reel quality.

Chris Cortez: The club’s leading scorer. Cortez is a big, veteran presence in the area and must be accounted for.

Three Keys to a Vegas Victory

Cut Out the Counter

Rising FC can flip the pitch FAST. Solomon Asante, Amadou Dia, Jason Johnson, and the crew can all get out and run. The Lights need to make sure they defend the counter attack responsibly, something they’ve struggled with at times this year.

Hold the Ball…At Least a Little Bit

While the Lights rarely lead in possession, they may want to try to control the ball a bit more in this one. Phoenix has an explosive attack and if they don’t have the ball, they can’t score. With Carlos Alvarez back, the club should be able to work the ball around.

Ferrino To The Rescue

The Lights goalkeeper doesn’t have great numbers across the board with goals allowed, clean sheets, etc. But, he makes massive saves at least a couple times a match. Against Phoenix, the club may need him to make some ridiculous saves to keep this one close.

The More You Know

-Carlos Alvarez should be back from suspension in this match. The club could use his playmaking ability.

-Joel Huiqui and Miguel Garduno are both still out due to suspension.

-Carter Manley made his Lights’ debut against OC after arriving on loan from Minnesota United FC.

-It’s UFC Night! Some UFC fighters will be in attendance for a meet & greet.
