J Hector Diaz of Chula Vista FC talks Youth Soccer

With the changes in the Development Academy, we decided to check in with an expert. Alan and Chris chatted with J Hector Diaz from Chula Vista FC. They are soccer program in the South Bay of San Diego. They have a large youth program for boys and girls and a men’s first team. Hector is the Technical Director for the program and he shared a lot of his insights.

Hector first shared what his job with the club was, and how he came to Chula Vista. Next, he talked about the state of youth soccer in the San Diego region and how Chula Vista joined the US Development Academy (the DA). He then talked about his experiences traveling around the world and seeing what is working and what is not.

The guys also got into the “pay to play” system, and Hector shared some very interesting thoughts and ideas. He had recently spelled them out in an article he published on the Chula Vista FC website. Hector makes some good points as well as why solidarity payments might not be in the cards for teams.

After that, Chris has Hector go through his experiences with the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Chula Vista FC had a really nice run that took them to Arizona where they beat the team that is now Phoenix Rising. He talks about the atmosphere in Sacramento being very impressive.

Lastly, Hector gives us his thoughts on where San Diego Loyal can fit in within the youth system. He is hopeful that SD Loyal will start something and help lift youth soccer to another level. We want to thank J Hector Diaz for coming on.
