Confetti showers at Cashman: Lights take 4-2 win over Republic

After trailing 1-0, Las Vegas Lights FC stormed back to stomp Sacramento, 4-2.

With multiple mariachi bands, inflatable Jarritos advertisements, and luchador capes, the fans at Cashman Field were looking for a party at Cashman Field last night during Cinco de Mayo weekend. They were treated to a six-goal match with their home side, Las Vegas Lights FC, taking a 4-2 victory. Santiago Echavarria, Irvin Parra, Gabe Robinson, and Junior Sandoval provided the goals for the hosts.

Key Stats

🔑  20 tackles/five shots blocked. The Lights were flying around the pitch tonight and were willing to put their bodies on the line for their teammates.

🔑 Three offside calls. Despite being without some key defenders, Lights FC’s backline communicated well and caught the Republic attackers offside a few times, including a play that ended with the ball in the back of the net.

🔑 33/35 passes completed. When Pablo Cruz has a significant role, the club plays well. He connected on 94% of his passes and created three chances.

Three Brightest Lights

💡💡💡 Irvin Parra: I won’t be surprised if we see Irvin Parra in the USL’s Team of the Week. He scored the equalizer after the club went down in the second half and tallied two assists. Parra often dropped to mid-pitch to get the ball and start the attack.

💡💡 Junior Sandoval: He completed 90% of his 51 passes and scored a goal for Lights FC. His four tackles show he was a willing defender as well.

💡  Gabe Robinson: The defender added a goal, had four clearances, and created some dangerous moments with his long throws.

Quick Kicks

⚽ Another dang good atmosphere in downtown Las Vegas. The fans are engaged in the matches this year and seem to enjoy Eric Wynalda’s aggressive but responsible style.

⚽ I’m not sure why Memphis 901 FC decided to move Junior Sandoval, but he has been invaluable to the Lights since arriving last month.

⚽ I’m still pondering over a unique nickname for the Dudley Boyz duo up top of Sammy Ochoa and Irvin Parra. Stay tuned!

⚽ Nice debut for Echavarria! After playing ten professional minutes, he scored his first professional goal with a lovely control and precise shot from the area.

⚽ The Lights played at a good pace last night. They were working hard, pressed the action when they went down, then they did well to mix playing fast and holding possession after taking the lead.

Okay, What’s Next?

The Lights will have a chance to stay hot at home as they play Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Cashman Field next Saturday. Switchbacks FC sit second to the bottom of the USL Championship Western Conference table. They are winless in their last five, including four losses in that stretch.
