All Toros, No Bull: Matchup vs. Switchbacks FC comes at the perfect time

With RGVFC fading further from a playoff spot by the week, a matchup vs. a club below them could be just what the doctor ordered.

Returning home from a loss in Las Vegas, RGVFC suffered another defeat, this time vs. Reno 1868 FC at H-E-B Park. Andres Arcila scored the lone goal for the Toros and Thomas Janjigian and Aidan Apodaca tallied for the visitors. Next up, the Toros travel to Colorado to take on Switchbacks FC.

RGVFC Toros (6-11-5)

Saturday's loss was a tough one for the Toros. Playing at home, they fired 21 shots and held a narrow lead in possession. But, they came up short again. They were done in by a corner kick and a hellacious counter-attack after they nearly scored themselves.

While the results aren't there, positives continue to emerge from this season. Isidro Martinez continues to be an impact player and Andres Arcila announced himself with a great goal. I've heard about his skill in practice, but to see him display it in a match was great for the youngster. It was also nice to see Michael Salazar back in the Valley, but with limited opportunities for Houston, he was a little rusty and couldn't convert on his four shots.

Top Toros

Andres Arcila: What a first goal for the Colombian! He dazzled with his dribbling and looked good in his second start. Arcila scored the lone goal for RGVFC and added two chances created.

Eric Bird: A frequent loanee recently, Bird finished with five shots, registered a tackle, and blocked three Reno shots.

Jesus "Chuy" Enriquez: While he still hasn't broken out of his goal/assist drought, Chuy did just about everything else on Saturday. He connected on 91% of his passes, drew two fouls, and created three chances.

This Week's Quote-A-Bull: Robert Coronado

On the excitement of Arcila scoring his first goal:

It was great seeing Andres score his first goal of the season, especially because he is the type of player to score class goals like that! We were actually talking in the locker room before the match about celebrating together if he scored. He's been working really hard and deserved it."

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (6-14-2)

Following back-to-back wins, Switchbacks FC have lost two straight. Both losses came on the road. When the clubs met earlier this season at home, RGVFC buried Colorado Springs 3-0 at H-E-B Park.

Tied for the league's lowest-scoring side, Switchbacks FC don't boast a player with more than five goals. Their leading scorer is Jordan Burt, a central midfielder. The club has struggled to get any production from their strikers. This should be a match where the Toros can push the action and take chances with the overall lack of danger going the other direction.

A Light Preview: Match #22 vs. Sacramento Republic FC

Looking at the Lights (7-9-5)

In recent weeks, the Lights have been outside of the playoff positions, but with a couple of wins consecutively, they could get above the line. Unfortunately, the club has struggled for consistency throughout the year, especially of late. Only twice this season have the Lights won back-to-back matches and they have never had a winning streak longer than two. Their last five results have been L/D/L/W/L.

For Eric Wynalda's side, and a lot of other teams, road matches are all about efficiency. No, you won't hold a lot of the ball or have a ton of shots, but it's about what you do with their opportunities. Irvin Parra has been a solid player for Las Vegas, but almost entirely at home. His impact on the road has been limited and the lack of gamechanging talents on the roster, it's difficult to expect someone to have a moment of brilliance to win you the match. Jose Villarreal and Pablo Cruz can create chances, even with limited touches, but Parra and Preston Tabort Etaka must be clinical in front of goal. The club has missed Mobi Fehr's passing presence in the middle of the park and will be without fellow midfielder Jonathan Levin against Sacramento. It would be great to see Junior Sandoval or Vinnie Vermeer make some special plays.

Who you should know: Sacramento Republic FC (9-9-3)

(MLS veteran goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth has arrived in Sacramento on loan.)

Stefano Bonomo: He enters the match off of a brace last time out and an appearance on the USL Championship Team of the Week. Bonomo has four goals on the season and leads the team in duels and aerial duels won.

Cam Iwasa: The hometown hero leads the club in goals with ten. He also has club-highs in shots and shots on target.

Mitchell Taintor: From the backline, he has two goals and 952 passes, a team-high. His 200 long passes are the most by an outfield player by nearly 100.
